21:12 – 19
The Lord said to his disciples, “Beware of men; for they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. This will be a time for you to bear testimony. Settle it therefore in your minds, not to meditate beforehand how to answer; for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and some of you they will put to death; you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.”
CHOIR
Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You.
READER
Psalm 50 (51).
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar.
CHOIR
At the intercession of the holy Martyr, O Lord of mercy, blot out my many offenses.
At the intercession of the Theotokos, O Lord of mercy, blot out my many offenses.

Ode i.
Canon for the Theotokos.
Heirmos. Mode 2.
To the melody, “He once submerged Pharaoh's whole army in the deep.”
Troparia.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
From all women, God selected you, * blameless, holy Virgin pure, * for you were lovely and fair and most beautiful. * As a babe He dwelt within your all-blameless womb. * We implore you, all-blameless one, * pray to Him to free from blame of their transgressions all who sing your praise.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
As the Psalmist said it long ago, * you stood at the right hand of the divine King, who came forth from your holy womb, * as a Queen, O Virgin pure. * Pray to Him for me, to permit me place to stand * near Him on His right hand, * on that day of just rewards, O Bride of God.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
Dry was human nature to the core, * due to all its deviance. * But you gave birth to rain from heaven, namely Christ, * who through you renewed it all. * I implore you now, make the soil of my sorry soul * once again be fruitful, * for my sins have dried it up, O Bride of God.
From the Menaion. Canon 2.
Mode 2. Long ago the overwhelming Force.
To the melody, “He once submerged Pharaoh's whole army in the deep.”
Saint of God, intercede for us.
After you had come to faith in Christ, * and before your death in Christ, * you resurrected a man who was dead before. * Therefore, O all-blessed Saint * Panteleimon, as I am dead, being stung by sin, * with faith I implore you: * Pray for me that I may be alive again.
Saint of God, intercede for us.
Shining like a bright and rising star, * even as a youth you had * mature and godly perception, O blessed Saint. * Adding the nobility * of your holy soul to your body’s attractiveness, * you were viewed as very * handsome by the Logos who is glorified.
Blessed Saint, by dying to the world, * and by being born anew, * putting on Christ through the water of baptism, * you became an instrument * of the Spirit and a vessel of grace divine, * treating every illness, * healing the infirmities of everyone.
Human nature had become accursed * by the disobedience * to the Creator. O Virgin, but since you have * given birth to Christ our God, * you have blessed it and from destruction delivered it. * Now all we the faithful * joyfully extol you and we call you blest.
Ode i. Katavasia. Mode 4.
When the hosts of Israel crossed the Red Sea, * passing through the midst of the sea on foot, and did not get wet, * they beheld Pharaoh’s army, * the horsemen and chosen captains, submerged beneath the waters. * With great rejoicing they sang this song, * “Let us sing to our God, for He is greatly glorified.”
Ode iii.
From the Menaion. Canon 1.
Heirmos. Mode 2.
Ἐξήνθησεν ἡ ἔρημος.
Troparia.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
When He put on my human form, * O all-blameless one, your Son, * the Maker, from your womb came forth; * and to those who because of many sins * had been stripped, He gave robes of immortality.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
O Lady, as the Mother of the most honored Word of God, * intently pray to Him for me * to take pity on my dejected soul * that submitted to pleasures that dishonor it.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
O Virgin all-immaculate, * heal the bruises on my soul. * With your effective medicine * treat my heart, which is in a sorry state, * for venom of the serpent has infected it.
From the Menaion. Canon 2.
Mode 2. The gentile church.
Ἐξήνθησεν ἡ ἔρημος.
Saint of God, intercede for us.
Thrice-blessed one, you heard the words * of the Spirit and became * like good and fruitful earth, O Saint, * that accepted the precious seed in it * and produced in abundance the salvation of souls.
Saint of God, intercede for us.
You put to death within yourself * all demonic toxic thoughts; * and in the Spirit born anew, * Panteleimon, you made your soul alive. * Now in heaven you stand beside the King of all.
You disobeyed the godless charge * of the tyrant emperor, * and you believed in Christ as God. * To obtain Him you traded everything, * like that merchant who found the most precious pearl.
You carried in your arms the Lord * who upholds creation all * by His divine command and will, * holy Virigin. And therefore pray to Him * to rescue us from danger and to save our souls.
Ode iii. Katavasia. Mode 4.
Weakened is the bow of mighty men, * and those who are weak are girded with strength from our righteous God. * For this reason, as it is written, my heart is strengthened in the Lord.

Mode pl. 4. By conceiving the Wisdom.
To the melody, “Having conceived the Wisdom and Word.”
To your father you bravely witnessed to Christ; * and then after proclaiming the Faith to him, * O Martyr, you pulled him up from the ocean of ignorance. * And being unafraid of the tyrant’s ungodliness, * you put to shame the demons’ conceit, which was impotent. * Therefore you received from God the grace of healing * spiritual illnesses and physical infirmities, * O Panteleimon, extolled by all. * Intercede with Christ our God, that He grant forgiveness of offenses, * to us who celebrate your holy memory with faith and love.
Mode pl. 4. Automelon.
By conceiving the Wisdom and Word of God * in your womb without burning, O Mother of God, * you gave birth ineffably to the One who has made all things, * and you have nursed the Master who nourishes everything, * and in your arms you held Him who holds up the universe. * Therefore, O all-holy Virgin Mary, I pray you, * that I be forgiven of my offenses when I shall stand before Him who created me. * O all-lauded Lady most pure, I implore you, grant me your assistance then. * I, your servant, have you as my only hope.
Ode iv.
From the Menaion. Canon 1.
Heirmos. Mode 2.
Ἐλήλυθας ἐκ Παρθένου.
Troparia.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
O Lady, please, let a drop of compunction rain down on me, * which will make the scorching heat subside inside of my aching heart, * and suppress the harmful floods * of the depression afflicting my sorry soul.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
Immaculate, holy Virgin, I pray, do not pass me by, * as you see my lying here. The knife of pleasure has wounded me. * Heal me by the spear and blood * of Christ your Son, who is our God who was crucified.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
Enriched are you, with the mastery over creation all. * Pleasure has impoverished me. Please make worthy of grace divine, * so that I may magnify * you my benevolent patroness, all-blameless one.
From the Menaion. Canon 2.
Mode 2. You came, O Lord.
Ἐλήλυθας ἐκ Παρθένου.
Saint of God, intercede for us.
Your soul was pricked with the love for the Lord, so you stripped yourself * of wealth and gave it away * to those in need, as you trained yourself * for the feat of martyrdom, * which you accomplished foreseeing the eternal hopes.
Saint of God, intercede for us.
To God the Lord you presented the spiritual sacrifice * of praise, as you actively * abhorred the rites of idolatry. * You trampled the insolence * of the ungodly, O blessed medaled martyr Saint.
Contending with those infected with envy and jealously, * O Martyr, you countered them * with unassailable might of God, * and you were victorious * in overturning the iniquitous tyranny.
As the Song says, the young maidens and virgins run after you, * beholding that you are both * a virgin maiden and Mother as well. * You alone, O Bride of God, * combine both states in your one person ineffably.
Ode iv. Katavasia. Mode 4.
I have heard about Your glorious divine economy, O Christ my God, * that You were born of the virgin Maiden, * so as to free from error those who cry to You, * Glory to Your strength, O Lord my God.
Ode v.
From the Menaion. Canon 1.
Heirmos. Mode 2.
Μεσίτης Θεοῦ.
Troparia.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
Immaculate Maid, * who gave birth to Him who is way and the life, * I pray you to guide me straight on the narrow way, for I have senselessly * hurled myself to perdition and trackless lands of tragedy.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
I foolishly lived * a licentious life, estranging myself from God, * and I have been wandering far away in passions like a foreign land. * Bring be back, holy Virgin, and save me, by your prayers for me.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
I pray, let me drink * from refreshing streams of life that flow from you, * O Mother and Virgin pure; for the flames of sinful deeds are burning me, * and the demons assault me, your servant, and are scorching me.
From the Menaion. Canon 2.
Mode 2. You are the light.
To the melody, “O Christ, the Illumination of those in darkness.”
Saint of God, intercede for us.
You underwent the ordeals of your martyrdom with rejoicing, * indeed, being fortified by divine might. * As you endured the many methods of torture * resolutely, you cried aloud with joy, * “Jesus, I am certain that there is no God but You.”
Saint of God, intercede for us.
O blessed Saint, you competed in martyrdom like an athlete. * Energized by God, you became the victor * over the tyranny and mad superstitions * of the godless and pagan emperor, * for you put on Christ, who sets the contests and judges them.
O blessed Saint, in possessing a vigorous constitution, * your soul being sound and robust and noble, * and by the holy Cross’s grace being strengthened, * and having a courageous frame of mind, * you endured the various tortures with fortitude.
All the obscure enigmatic pronouncements of ancient sages, * and inspired predictions of holy Prophets, * clearly prefigured you, O glorious Lady, * as the Virgin who would give birth to God. * Therefore, we are certain that no one is pure like you.
Ode v. Katavasia. Mode 4.
You divided the light from the primordial darkness, * so that Your works, in the light, may sing praises to You, * the Creator, O Christ. * We now entreat You: * In Your light make straight our ways.
Ode vi.
From the Menaion. Canon 1.
Heirmos. Mode 2.
To the melody, “In the abyss of my sins.”
Troparia.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
Let me not be the object of ridicule * by the wicked demons, O Lady, on Judgment Day, * but pray for me to Christ, the Judge * and your Son, to regard me with charity.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
I have moved You to wrath with my shameful thoughts * and my wicked deeds and transgressions and sins, O Lord. * Forgive me, by your Mother’s prayers, * in Your mercy, and save me, O Christ my God.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
You gave birth to the Lord of the universe, * who as God will Judge all. Alas, I am self-condemned * in many sins. O Lady, please, * from His just condemnation deliver me.
From the Menaion. Canon 2.
Mode 2. Like a deep sea, my sins.
To the melody, “In the abyss of my sins.”
Saint of God, intercede for us.
You disparaged the rites of idolatry * and exposed its fraud, terminating it, * O Panteleimon wise in God, * working marvelous healings and miracles.
Saint of God, intercede for us.
You were crowned for your excellent victory, * for you passed through fire and water, like David said. * When mindless men had stretched you out * on the wheel, you defeated them wondrously.
By enduring unbearably harrowing * torture of your body, by grace and your steadfastness * of soul, O godly-minded Saint, * you defeated the tyrants’ audacity.
In divinity, Christ is uncircumscribed, * and as God He holds in His hand the entire earth; * but in His body circumscribed, * He was held in your arms, holy Virgin pure.
Ode vi. Katavasia. Mode 4.
When I was afflicted, I cried out to the Lord my God, * the Lord of Deliverance. I prayed and He heard my voice.

Servants in Babylon, of old, * those three descendants of Abraham, trampled on the furnace fire. * In hymns they cried out to You, * “O Lord and God of our fathers, You are blessed.”
CHOIR
Ode viii.
We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.
Once in Babylon, those Servants, * on fire with divine zeal and longing, * courageously defying the threat * of both the tyrant and the flame, * were thrown into the midst of the furnace. * As they were refreshed with dew, * they were singing, “O all you works of the Lord, praise and bless the Lord.”

Ode ix.
The Magnificat. Mode 2.
Verse: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
Greater in honor than the Cherubim, and in glory greater beyond compare than the Seraphim; you without corruption gave birth to God the Word, and are truly Theotokos. You do we magnify.
Verse: For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
Greater in honor than the Cherubim, and in glory greater beyond compare than the Seraphim; you without corruption gave birth to God the Word, and are truly Theotokos. You do we magnify.
Verse: For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
Greater in honor than the Cherubim, and in glory greater beyond compare than the Seraphim; you without corruption gave birth to God the Word, and are truly Theotokos. You do we magnify.
Verse: He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
Greater in honor than the Cherubim, and in glory greater beyond compare than the Seraphim; you without corruption gave birth to God the Word, and are truly Theotokos. You do we magnify.
Verse: He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty.
Greater in honor than the Cherubim, and in glory greater beyond compare than the Seraphim; you without corruption gave birth to God the Word, and are truly Theotokos. You do we magnify.
Verse: He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy, as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever.
Greater in honor than the Cherubim, and in glory greater beyond compare than the Seraphim; you without corruption gave birth to God the Word, and are truly Theotokos. You do we magnify.
From the Menaion. Canon 1.
Heirmos. Mode 2.
To the melody, “The Son of the unoriginate Father.”
Troparia.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
When Adam succumbed and ate forbidden fruit, he bitterly * garnered death and mortality from the tree of old. * When your Son was willingly nailed to the holy tree, He poured out the sweetness * of true immortality. Hence we honor you, O Virgin pure.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
O Lady, the Queen are you, for you gave birth ineffably * to the King and the Lord, who dissolved the realm of hell. * O all-holy Virgin, implore Him, that He account worthy of the kingdom * of heaven your servants all, who with faith and longing honor you.
Most-holy Theotokos, save us.
O Lady, I pray you to do good to my pathetic heart, * for indulgence in pleasure has harmed and wounded it. * You have given birth to the Good God, and you yourself are good, blessed Virgin. * To the good and open gates of repentance please direct my steps.
From the Menaion. Canon 2.
Mode 2. To us was revealed.
To the melody, “The Son of the unoriginate Father.”
Saint of God, intercede for us.
Rejoicing, O Martyr, you were transferred to that coveted * destination, O St. Panteleimon, where you dwell. * You were counted worthy of having * a blessed end, being truly blessed, * to be in the company * of the Master for eternity.
Saint of God, intercede for us.
O Saint, you were granted the fulfillment of your strong desire * and the end that you longed for, as you were dripping still * with your holy blood that was poured out * and shed for Christ, Martyr Panteleimon. * With joy you received from Him * crowns of glory for your martyrdom.
Like Daniel the Prophet in the den had stopped the lions’ mouths, * in the circus you likewise bridled the wild beasts. * For even irrational creatures * know to respect the virtue of Martyrs. * And therefore assembled now, * we extol you, O all-lauded Saint.
The fleece on which dew came down from heaven once prefigured you, * who conceived in the womb and brought forth the One who gives * everlasting life to believers * who worship Him as God and extol Him, * and call you the ever-blest * Theotokos, O all-blameless one.
Ode ix.
The Magnificat. Mode 4.

Ode ix. Katavasia. Mode 4.
Your childbirth occurred without corruption. * It was God, wearing flesh, who came forth from your all-holy womb. * He was seen upon the earth and lived among men, O Theotokos; * therefore we all magnify you.

CHANTER
Your blessing, holy Master! Mode pl. 4.
CHOIR
Lauds. Mode pl. 4.
Let everything that breathes praise the Lord. Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest. It is fitting to sing a hymn to You, O God.
Praise Him, all you His angels; praise Him, all you His hosts. It is fitting to sing a hymn to You, O God.
Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all you stars and light.
Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the Lord’s name.
For He spoke, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created.
He established them forever and unto ages of ages; He set forth His ordinance, and it shall not pass away.
Praise the Lord from the earth, you dragons and all the deeps.
Fire and hail, snow and ice, stormy wind, which perform His word.
Mountains and all the hills, fruitful trees and all cedars.
Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds.
Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth.
Young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord’s name, for His name alone is exalted.
His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people.
A hymn for all His saints, for the children of Israel, a people who draw near to Him.
Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His holy ones.
Let Israel be glad in Him who made him, and let the children of Zion greatly rejoice in their King.
Let them praise His name with dance; with tambourine and harp let them sing to Him.
For the Lord is pleased with His people, and He shall exalt the gentle with salvation.
The holy ones shall boast in glory, and they shall greatly rejoice on their beds.
The high praise of God shall be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand.
To deal retribution to the nations, reproving among the peoples.
To shackle their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.
To fulfill among them the written judgment: this glory have all His holy ones.
Praise God in His saints; praise Him in the firmament of His power.
Stichera. For the Saint.
Mode pl. 4. What a paradoxal.
To the melody, “O what a paradox.”
Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to the abundance of His greatness.
Clearly you were honored with the name Panteleimon by God, * for like Him you were merciful. * In accordance with your ways, you were given a fitting name. * For you show mercy and sympathy to all, * and you provide them with two-fold remedies. * Feeding and curing them * as you do, O glorious and blessed Saint, * you direct them to divine and splendid knowledge of Christ.
Praise Him with the sound of trumpet; praise Him with the harp and lyre.
Praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with strings and flute.
That which was in you accomplished was clearly the work of God * in His providence from on high. * For while you were clearly trained in the science of medicine, * Panteleimon, to heal the body’s ills, * you proved to be a physician of souls, * equipped with the word of grace. * Thus you granted remedies, and also freed * from the dark of false belief all those who came to you.
Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with triumphant cymbals; let everything that breathes praise the Lord.
Godly-minded Martyr, evenly you matched the beauty of soul * to your bodily comeliness, * and nobility of mind to your physical handsomeness. * And you astounded the people who observed * how you exhibited signs and miracles, * and how you had mature * understanding even in the bloom of youth, * and how you were radiant with faith and grace divine.
Mode 4.
The memory of the medaled Martyr has arisen today. Come, believers, let us spiritually celebrate, and let us crown him with our songs. He valiantly defeated the unseen enemy, by the power of the Cross. He was not frightened by the countless tortures of the tyrants, but he won according to the rules and received the prize of his calling from above. Now and forever he rejoices with the Angels. “O Martyr of Christ, St. Panteleimon, healer of the sick and harbor in the storm, do not cease interceding with merciful God, for the salvation of our souls.”
Mode 4.
Guard your servants from dangers of every kind, O blessed Theotokos, so that we may glorify you, the hope of our souls.
